Dorpje Mag Haar Eigen Naam Niet Meer Gebruiken

Nou ja, dat is niet helemaal waar. Maar als het aan Millennium and Copthorne Hotels groep lag, dan kon het al ruim 1000 jaar bestaande dorpje Copthorne opzoek gaan naar een nieuwe naam. Het hotel was er namelijk niet van gediend dat het dorpje de naam Copthorne gebruikte, terwijl deze naam door de hotelketen is geregistreerd: “…It has come to our attention that you have registered, without MCIL’s permission or authorization, the domain name [copthornevillage.org], which includes a protected trademark of MCIL. This unauthorized use of MCIL’s intellectual property falsely suggests MCIL’s association with or endorsement of your website and is likely to cause confusion in the minds of the public that the website is associated with or connected to MCIL and the products and services offered by Millennium Hotels & Resorts. As a result, substantial damage is likely to occur to the goodwill and reputation of these trademarks. We require that you immediately disable all content hosted at copthornevillage.org and allow the domain name to expire…” Toch lullig, aangezien er in het dorpje ook nog eens zeker 40 bedrijven bestaan die de naam Corthorpe ook gebruiken. Uiteindelijk bleek het allemaal op een “misverstand” te berusten en heeft de hotelketen haar claim ingetrokken. Maar ik denk wel dat Mark Monitor, die de claim uit naam van de hotelketen verstuurde, een nieuwe klant mag gaan zoeken. (via freeclimb)
